School District
Great Meadows Regional School District
(GMRSD)
I believe that a good education is one of the most valuable things that we can provide our children.
We as a community need to make sure that our children receive an education that will allow them to be successful.
The GMRSD has done a very good job of doing just that, but the necessary resources and funding seem to be under constant attack by the committeemen currently both representing Liberty and Independence.
I believe the GMRSD can only be as successful as the community that it serves. It is dependent not only on parents, but all the residents of Independence and Liberty Township.
Currently, the GMRSD is facing significant and critical challenges.
- First, I believe the endless lawsuits brought on by the Liberty Town Committee to deregionalize the school district must come to a quick resolution. These lawsuits have cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars from both townships and I believe that the Liberty committeemen represent a small but vocal minority who have used their positions of power and authority to in some ways, polarize our community and jeopardize our school district. So far, the Independence town committee has sat on the sidelines and watched these events unfold, while doing very little to be proactive in finding a resolution. I’m looking to change this!
- Secondly, our school budgets have now failed 2 years in a row. The fallout from the failed budgets is now approaching crisis mode. Courtesy busing and essential money needed for capital improvement projects for the schools are now on the chopping block. This is very bad for the community as a whole.
I believe that the role of the township committee should be to support the school district more as a partner in the community versus an adversary (which is what has happened in the past and present).
We should hold the school district fiscally responsible on how they spend taxpayer dollars, but realize the importance a strong school district has for our kids and individual property values.
